Shutter mechanisms
The shutter is the hardest-working moving part in a camera body. Typical symptoms include a shutter that will not fire at all, frames with a dark band or a partly black area where the blades have not travelled cleanly, a change in the sound the shutter makes, and bodies that have reached or passed the shutter count rated for the model.
Mirror box
On a DSLR the mirror box adds its own faults: a mirror that sticks in the up position, does not return after an exposure, or fouls against the focusing screen. A jammed mirror often shows first as an error message and a blacked-out viewfinder.
Error codes and electronics
Cameras that report an error code and refuse to shoot, bodies that will not power up, faults that come and go with temperature or after the camera has been running for a while, and boards affected by moisture or corrosion.
Controls and displays
Unresponsive buttons, dials that skip or do not register, mode dials that have lost their detents, and sticky or jammed switches. On the display side: cracked rear LCDs, dead or discoloured panels, backlight failure, and electronic viewfinders that stay blank or fail to switch over from the rear screen.
Card slots, ports and contacts
Bent or broken pins in a memory card slot, cards that will not seat or will not be recognised, damaged USB, HDMI, microphone and remote-release ports, and worn battery or grip contacts.
Impact and moisture damage
Dropped cameras, gear that has been rained on, splashed, dropped in sand or exposed to salt spray. Moisture damage is time-sensitive — take the battery and card out, do not try to power the camera on, and bring it in as it is rather than attempting to dry it out with heat.
Firmware
Bodies that fail or stall part-way through a firmware update, and cameras behaving oddly after one.
Spots in your images?
Dark spots that appear in the same place in every frame are usually dust or dirt on the sensor rather than a fault with the camera. That is a sensor clean, not a repair.
What to bring
Bring the battery and charger, a memory card, and the lens you were using if the fault only shows up with a particular lens. It helps to describe when the fault happens — every time, only in certain modes, or only occasionally — and sample images or a photo of the error message are worth bringing along.
